PURITY VS. QUANTITY: SAME VIAL. DIFFERENT QUESTION.
A peptide can test at 99% purity and still contain less—or more—material than the label claims.
That is because purity and quantity are not the same measurement.
Purity asks:
Of the peptide-related material detected, how much appears to be the target peptide rather than impurities?
Quantity asks:
How much of the target peptide is actually present in the vial?
Those answers can both be good.
They can both be bad.
Or one can look excellent while the other tells a very different story.
What peptide purity tells you
Purity is commonly evaluated using HPLC, which separates components in a sample so the main peptide peak can be compared with related impurities.
A result such as 99% purity generally means the target peptide made up about 99% of the peptide-related material detected by that method.
That is useful.
It is not the same as proving the vial contains the labeled number of milligrams.
What quantity tells you
Quantity testing estimates the actual amount of target peptide present.
So a vial labeled 10 mg may require a separate quantitative measurement to determine whether it actually contains approximately 10 mg of peptide.
This is why a report can show:
99% purity
while the measured quantity is:
8.7 mg
The material may be relatively pure.
There may simply be less of it than promised.
Why the difference matters
A high purity percentage is visually impressive.
It is also easy to misunderstand.
Think of it this way:
A glass can contain very clean water and still be only half full.
Purity describes how clean the material is relative to detected impurities.
Quantity describes how much material is there.
One does not replace the other.
Peptide manufacturers and analytical laboratories therefore treat purity and peptide content as distinct quality measurements, and both may matter when evaluating a sample.
What should you look for on a report?
Check whether the report separately identifies:
peptide identity
purity
measured quantity or peptide content
testing method
report or verification number
lot or batch information
Do not assume that a large purity number confirms every other claim on the label.
99% pure can be excellent news.
It still does not tell you how full the vial is.
